'Publicity stunt': UAE seeks dismissal of Sudan case at top UN court

Sudan has alleged that the UAE has violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention by arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces

The UAE deemed the case brought against it by Sudan at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a “cynical publicity stunt aimed at diverting attention from the established complicity of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the widespread atrocities that continue to devastate Sudan and its people,” a UAE government official told Khaleej Times on Thursday.

The UAE official reacted to the recent application by an SAF representative to the ICJ alleging the UAE violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention by arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The UAE official – who requested not to be identified – noted: “The allegations presented by the SAF representative at the ICJ lack any legal or factual basis, representing yet another attempt to distract from this calamitous war.

The official underscored: “The UAE has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire and most recently a Ramadan humanitarian pause - for both warring parties to disengage, and the restoration of a civilian government in Sudan.

“Despite the SAF's attempt to downplay the severity of the humanitarian crisis they have caused, the UAE, alongside international partners, recently facilitated a high-level humanitarian conference to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people,” the official added.

Call for immediate case dismissal

The UAE said: “Out of respect for the ICJ – as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations – the UAE will seek the immediate dismissal of the baseless application.

“We remain committed to upholding international law, ensuring accountability for atrocities committed by the two warring parties, and continuing our support for peace and humanitarian efforts in Sudan."

“SAF’s application to the ICJ does not absolve it from its legal and moral responsibility for its criminal acts and the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the country. It is clear that the SAF seeks to instrumentalise the Court in a poor attempt to secure its vested interests, rather than committing to international efforts towards peace in Sudan,” the UAE official added.
