The crashing of an overloaded transformer at around 3.30 in the evening caused the outage. The power had not been restored till 8pm.
According to technicians of Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity department, which arrived immediately after the outage, the electricity was expected to be restored as soon as the new transformer was fixed.
According to Syed Mohammed, a cable operator, replacing the massive transformer is a time consuming task. “This 11KV transformer had been supplying electricity to the buildings and it crashed due to extreme temperature,” said Syed Mohammed.
A good number of residents of these apartments located behind the Qatar Airways Building took flight to their friends or relatives to escape the sweltering heat. Dominique Fernandes, a resident of one of the buildings, said that he had been staying out since the electricity went off. “I will wait for an hour more and will move out to my friend's place. “We are taking our children to the nearby shopping mall. We hope we can come back tonight otherwise will think of some other option,” said an Arab family.
