Emirati Jiu-Jitsu stars win 23 medals, athletes grab 11 medals, and People of Determination excel with 14 medals
Bangladeshi expats in the UAE celebrated their homeland’s 50th Independence Day at their embassy’s new building in Abu Dhabi earlier today.
Mohammad Abu Zafar, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the UAE, led the ceremony, hoisting the national flag as the country’s anthem Amar Sonar Bangla played. This year’s event was restricted to embassy officials and a few members of the community, in compliance with Covid safety protocols.
Flowers were offered in tribute to the Father of the Nation ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Later, the ambassador held a short meeting with members of the community, highlighting the importance of the day and activities lined up for a year-long celebration.
This year, the UAE and Bangladesh are planning joint celebrations to mark their 50th year of nationhood through different programmes. Bangladesh was formed on March 26, 1971, while the UAE was founded on December 2, 1971.
Today's ceremony was the first major event held at the embassy, since it moved its operations from a villa in the city to the diplomatic enclave earlier this year.
