SHARJAH - Sharjah Municipality on Thursday urged owners of garment shops and showrooms not to use realistic mannequins for window displays.
However, a Sharjah Municipality source clarified that the rule banning realistic mannequins from window displays and in shops has been there in the emirate for the past five years.
A circular was issued to this effect yesterday just to remind the owners of garment shops and showrooms of the existing rules, the source added.
As per the rule, retail garment and fashion accessory showrooms and outlets in the emirate are allowed to use mannequins for window display, but they should be without heads.
Those with heads should have the facial features erased, Khaled Al Jabri, head of Market Control at Sharjah Municipality told Khaleej Times.
Al Jabri said the shop owners should respect the rules and culture of the emirate.
The official noted that the Municipality had issued the rule five years ago following a fatwa issued by the Islamic Affairs Department.
He pointed out that the reminder was necessitated by the fact that some outlets had stopped abiding by the rule.
“We recently found some shops displaying naked dummies or mannequins adorning only lingerie,” he said.
Al Jabri, however, clarified that the number of violators is not very high. The official refused to disclose the quantum of fines to be imposed on the violators.
