DUBAI - Number 98 in 'F' series raked in Dh2.4 million after intense bidding by eager buyers at the 55th auction of distinguished car number plates organised by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Thursday.
The second highest price of Dh2,140,000 was fetched by number 74, also in the 'F' series, followed by Dh1,120,000 for number 81.
The total proceeds of the auction reached Dh25.5 million. Some 300 bidders took part in the auction, which generated Dh25.5 million.
The auction witnessed heated bidding over a total of 106 distinguished two, three, four and five-digit numbers of D, E, and F categories. The three-digit numbers attracted the bidders and the numbers 800, 900 and 110 in 'F' series were sold for an estimated Dh2.7 million. The number F-900 fetched Dh930,000 followed by the number 800 which went for Dh900,000.
A number of bidders vied keenly for 4-digit numbers 1919, 1122, 2211, 1991, 5115, 7337 and 9559 in 'F' series, which were eventually sold for a total amount of Dh783,000. The number 1122 attracted the highest bid of Dh149,000.
In the 5-digit category, the number 13000 fetched the highest price of Dh220,000, followed by 17000 that was sold for Dh200,000. “It is all about competition and status. I have been a regular in these auctions for quite some time now. Having good numbers on our cars is a special thing for us and is a matter of pride and prestige,” quipped a UAE national who declined to give his name.
