Dubai Meteorological Office duty forecaster Amna Yasin said while yesterday's breeze was the only indication of a weak shamal in the region, sand and dust had drifted with it from the north.

“There was a strong shamal in Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain which brought a lot of sand and dust,” Yasin said.

It did signal cooler temperatures for this week, a relief after a February record high of 32 degree Celsius on Friday, according to Yasin.

“Temperatures will be a little cooler with winds from the North West,” she said.

“On Wednesday, a strong shamal will start which will also bring down temperatures.

“There will be a marine warning but (in Dubai) it should only reach a maximum of 20 knots.”

While the sand was expected to clear last night, a heavy fog was predicted to build after midnight.

The fog was expected to reduce visibility to 200 metres in Dubai at its peak around dawn and clear by around 7am.
