December 15 will see the partial opening of the New Garhoud Bridge in the direction from Bur Dubai to Deira, it was announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the Board and executive director of RTA, said that four lanes at the new bridge would be opened in the direction from Bur Dubai to Deira. While traffic will be diverted from Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road to the new bridge, traffic from Deira to Bur Dubai will use the same old Al Garhoud Bridge.

Al Tayer said that the partial opening of the bridge would mark the celebrations of Eid Al Adha. “Traffic diverted to the New Al Garhoud Bridge will break up at the end of the bridge into three lanes bound to Al Qusais and Sharjah. The remaining lane will further lead to four lanes, two of which will lead to Al Rebat Road outbound to Al Rashidiya and Nad Al Hamar, and the other two lanes to Casablanca Road outbound to Dubai International Airport,” revealed Al Tayer.

He said that the construction of the new bridge had entered its final stages.

“The bridge, which will open in March next year, consists of 14 lanes, seven for traffic bound from Bur Dubai to Deira, and seven for traffic from Deira heading to Bur Dubai,” said Al Tayer.

The official added the New Al Garhoud Bridge has been designed by utilising the latest architectural designs and consisted of distinctively beautiful piles and arches which would add aesthetic touch to it.

The bridge will also have a 3-meter wide footpath along with nicely designed lighting poles.

Al Tayer said that once the new bridge is fully opened and operational, the existing bridge would be demolished. The Salik gate at the existing Garhoud Bridge will also be relocated to the new bridge.

Meanwhile, motorists rejoiced at the news. Jairam Paneesh, a bank employee who lives in Al Nahda area said, “The opening of the new bridge is a landmark step by the RTA. Travelling from Bur Dubai to Deira and back, and Dubai to Sharjah and back has become very troublesome. Though the Floating Bridge has provided some relief, things are still pretty tough. The new bridge should solve a lot of problems.”
