Lifetime Umrah, a charity initiative, has collected over Dh160,000 to help workers visit Saudi Arabia and perform Umrah, a top official has said.
The Federal Authority of Human Resources, in collaboration with the Dar Al Ber Society, has collected the amount to send 106 low-income workers to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.
"We have managed to collect more than Dh160,000 via SMS and Dar Al Ber bank accounts in just five days," said Mahmoud Al Mazrouie, corporate communication manager with the authority.
The campaign, which saw an overwhelming response, is the first step in a strategic partnership between the authority and society, he added.
"More philanthropic and voluntary drives are to be launched for the benefit of vulnerable people registered with the society in view of the 'Year of Giving' presidential initiative."
Hisham Al Zahrani, deputy head of community service with Dar Al Ber, said they will secure all the services needed for the participant workers, which include food, water, accommodation, religious advice and other necessary assistance.
Official records show that Dar Al Ber has so far collected and spent Dh1.62million on the 'Lifetime Umrah' project, which was launched across the country in 2014.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, executive director of Dar Al Ber, said the pilgrims are each provided with Ihram clothes, 10litre Zamzam water, free meals, accommodation at four-star hotels close to the two holy mosques.
"The trip itinerary includes interesting visits to the holy lands, spanning Arafat, Mina, Muzdalifa in Makkah, the Qibaa mosque and the Al Baqeea Cemetery in Madinah."
