The UAE fell silent today, Sunday 30 November, at 11:30 am to honour the nation’s martyrs who gave their lives in service of the country. Flags were lowered nationwide from 8 am, then raised again after the moment of reflection along with the national anthem.

Commemoration Day, observed every year on 30 November, pays tribute to the UAE’s heroes and the values they stood for including duty, loyalty and belonging. The date marks the sacrifice of Salem Suhail bin Khamis Al Dahmani, the first Emirati martyr, who died defending the Union’s sovereignty on Greater Tunb island in 1971.

In a message marking the occasion, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the nation honours the martyrs who upheld the highest ideals of sacrifice and courage while protecting the UAE’s security and values.

He added that their memory remains a source of pride for their families and for all Emiratis and that the strongest way to honour them is through unity and continued work toward the country’s progress and stability.

The Ministry of Defence also shared on X that Martyrs Day is a renewed pledge of loyalty and appreciation to those who gave everything in service to their country. A video posted for the occasion featured children of martyrs, highlighting the care and support the leadership continues to provide to their families.

A participant noted that the day strengthens national unity across society and serves as a reminder that the peace and safety enjoyed today is the result of the sacrifices of the fallen.

One of the main places of commemoration is Wahat Al Karama in Abu Dhabi, a landmark opposite the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque dedicated to the UAE’s martyrs. The site includes large structures that lean on one another to represent the bond between the nation’s leaders and its people, and serves as a permanent reminder of their sacrifice.

Lieutenant General Ibrahim Nasser Al Alawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence, said the day ensures their bravery remains alive in the nation’s memory so the UAE stays strong with its flag held high.
