The court ordered the company to vacate the building and hand it over to the Department of Commercial Buildings.

Ali Al Berairi, manager of the company, told Khaleej Times the court issued its verdict on February 13 and he was shocked to see court representatives, officials from the department, two policemen and two carpenters in the building lounge, demanding immediate evacuation.

“It was a surprise for me and for the 72 families residing in the apartments for years,” he said. “I told the executing officers that it was not possible to evict the families in a day. They gave us until February 27 to vacate.”He said the company was managing the building on behalf of the heirs of a man (who died later), who had rented the building from the department in 1996 on an annual rent of around Dh2 million.
