A man, who tried to smuggle more than 4kgs of hashish in pairs of jeans via an airport in Dubai, faced trial on Sunday at the Court of First Instance on charges of possession and smuggling of drugs.

According to public prosecution records, the 52-year-old Indian man, holder of a Dubai visit visa, was arrested in October last year, at the Dubai International Airport after the customs inspector found 4.1kgs of marijuana stashed in his clothes in his luggage.

A customs inspector said he was on duty on October 28, last year, at Terminal 3 checking for lost bags at an airline warehouse.
He saw the defendant's bag and found it to be looking suspicious as it passed through the X-ray machine.
"It was coming from India. There was something not right about its volume. After we opened and searched it, we found four pair of jeans. There were eight bags containing a herbal substance stashed inside the pockets."
The bag's owner was identified through the airline. He was held by the anti-narcotics policemen and brought by the CID officers to Terminal 3, where he was confronted with the bag.
"He admitted that the bag - containing the drugs - belonged to him and that he knew about the stash. He said he was delivering the substance for someone here," the inspector told the prosecutor.
The officer added that the bag arrived at the airport on October 19, 2018, and the defendant did not report it as lost. The accused was then handed over to the narcotics department for legal proceedings.
The drugs seized from the accused included hashish and weighed more than 4.1kgs, as per the Dubai police crime lab report.
A verdict will be issued on March 6.
