The Fujairah Criminal Court has ordered a housemaid to serve six months in prison for stealing her sponsor's gold jewellery and running away from the house. She will be deported after serving her jail term.
Court records show that the accused was carrying out routine house cleaning when she found a gold necklace and bracelet of her sponsor in the hall.
Instead of giving them back to her sponsor, the maid hid the jewellery in her private room.
She waited for her sponsor to go outdoors and then went out herself on the pretext that she needed to buy some grocery items from the nearby supermarket.
The suspect managed to flee from the house. The sponsor waited for the maid to show up, but in vain. She tried to call her several times, but her mobile phone was switched off.
She then started having suspicion about her absence and looked for her gold necklace and bracelet.
After discovering that her jewellery was missing, she approached the Fujairah Police about the theft and reported about the absconding domestic help to them.
The CID sleuths started investigations and managed to locate the maid who admitted to stealing the jewellery and her plans to sell the same to someone she knew.
The maid was referred to the Fujairah Public Prosecution which charged her with stealing her sponsor's gold necklace and bracelet and escaping with the jewellery.
The case was moved to the Fujairah Criminal Court where the accused confessed to the theft. She said she ran away as she was afraid of punishment after stealing her sponsor's jewellery.
The court ordered her to serve six months in jail and deportation thereafter.
