The gesture follows his interaction with officials associated with Dubai Cares campaign launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to help educate millions of poor children around the world.
Merchant submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Education saying that he is willing to pay the fees of all expatriate students in the government schools whose parents are unable to meet their education expenses.
The ministry has issued a circular to all educational zones to list the names of the students who have not paid the fees (Dh6,000 per student) so far. “I arrived in the UAE in 1989 and started my gold business from a small shop at Morshid Bazaar in Dubai,” Merchant told Khaleej Times.
“My business has grown. Thanks to god, the number of my stores in the UAE and other GCC countries stands at 40 now,” he said.
He said it was not the first time he had considered donating funds for a worthy cause. “One part of the fund earmarked for charity this year would be given to the Ministry of Education and another - totalling Dh500,000 - to the Ministry of Health to provide treatment to patients who cannot afford.
