Col. Al Matrooshi was speaking on the occasion of a one-day seminar on ‘Passive Fire Resistance in Buildings’, held yesterday, under the sponsorship of Dubai Civil Defence. “Since civil defence is the main body to ensure safety, especially fire safety, we spare no efforts in conducting studies and upgrading capabilities to face potential hazards, taking advantage of the latest developments in this field. The symposium — which focused on the buildings’ fire and internal fittings resistance — is a circle of our long chain of symposia and educational lectures aiming at upgrading skills,” Col. Al Matrooshi explained, noting that international statistics showed that there were more deaths due to smoke suffocation than from the fire itself.

About nine lectures were held on various safety issues. Peter Jackman, Chairman and Technical Director of International Fire Consultants (IFC), delivered a lecture titled ‘Fire Safety Engineering’ (FSE). He explained that the consequences of not fully embracing and encouraging the further development of FSE in the region will be to hamper the design and engineering process and the development and delivery of World Class buildings and designs. Rhod Williams, Technical Director of Halspan Ltd, spoke about the door types, applications, and fit-for-purpose types of timbre fire-door constructions. He gave a presentation on the internal pedestrian access and functional requirements of doors.

Mathew Jones, Commercial Director, Handles and Fittings (HAF), delivered a lecture on ‘Door Hardware’ and the incorrect specifications that lead to failure. Mr Jones explained the guidelines and specifications of door hardware on fire doors. The danger of smoke and the need for smoke protection was the theme of the fourth lecture titled ‘Fire and Smoke Resisting Door Assemblies’. The lecture was delivered by Phil Cavalier from Lorient Polyproducts.

Peter Jackman from International Fire Consultants spoke about fire performance of products as well as the criterion and basis of evaluation, while Jerry Quayle from IFC Certification gave a presentation on the quality of manufactured and installed fire safety products.

Mike Wood from Pilkington delivered a lecture titled ‘Fire Glass — types and applications’. He explained how glass behaves in a fire, the technology strategies for fire-resistant glass, and how heat transfers through glass. Peter Worrall from AEI Cables spoke about fire resistance cables, while Mr Cavalier explained the nature of sound, the test procedures and reports, as well as effective design and independent accreditation.
