The collision took place on the factory premises causing the diesel to leak, followed by the fire which spread to the labour accommodation and the office complex, destroying both completely, police sources said. However, nobody was injured as the workers had fled their rooms as soon as the fire started, they said.

Brigadier Gareeb Shaban, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence Department, told Khaleej Times that the firefighting units from Mulailha and Samnan fire stations managed to douse the fire in about three hours.

“When we reached there, we noticed that the fire was huge. Immediately, we decided to seek the help from the army and called for additional water tankers from the Ajman Civil Defence Department,” he said.

Lt Mohammed Al Qadi, from Muwailih Civil Defence Centre, said when they reached the site, the flames were spreading rapidly and had reached the labour accommodation and offices. The two oil tankers were already gutted.

The firefighters first controlled the fire that raged on the ground due to the diesel spill before it spread to the other tankers parked on the premises.

The police said an investigation was on to ascertain the cause behind the tanker collision and the fire.
