The remarkable power of the ancient system of natural health has spread worldwide, making Chinese and Indian herbal methods popular worldwide.
Taking a look at various methods of treatment for infertility available in the UAE, Khaleej Times asked Pakistani, Chinese and Indian herbal doctors to shed light on the problem.
Professor Hakeem M Karam Nawaz Sabri from Modern Centre for Natural Herbs in Deira said that many healthy couples in the UAE face this problem because of work-related tensions and stress.
"A healthy couple can become incompatible if faced with stress. Mental and physical relaxation is necessary to live a happily married life and bear children," he said.
Hakeem Sabri, who has been researching on the issue for the past 27 years, said: "I discovered that the Asian kitchen was the major provider of this treatment."
He said different kind of herbs were needed for different types of infertility treatments. "I have to personally meet patients for over a time period and treat them according to their temperament, height and weight," he said. Sometimes a dose of black pepper and fennel seeds also do wonders, he said.
According to Hakeem Sabri, more women than men in the UAE suffer from infertility-related problems. For men, the diagnosis takes up to one month while for women, it may take more than three months because of the menstrual cycles, he said, adding that the time period for treatment varies according to the ailment and physical-built of the person.
"Women have more uterus and Fallopian tubes-related problems but they are easier to treat while sexual problems in men cannot be treated in certain cases," said Hakeem Sabri.
He says that no synthetic material is used, therefore making it safer than allopathy. Hakeem Sabri, who claims to have had 99 per cent success in his treatments, recommends a fat-free diet for barren women. "Avoid proteins and fats, but eat fish, chicken and lots of vegetables," he says.
Dr Saleha M. of Chinese Medical Centre confirmed that treatment for women was easier than that of men.
"Most men of the subcontinent indulge in unhealthy habits that lead to 100 per cent infertility," she said. Dr Saleha said that several women in the UAE, due to the high-levels of stress, suffered from hormonal changes and menstrual problems that also caused infertility.
She said that the Chinese method of treating infertility include acupuncture which is an effective, safe, natural, cost efficient and virtually painless method of treatment for both men and women.
"Though we do not give guarantee of the results, we do all the best during treatment," she said. Other Chinese treatments include Chinese herbal tea and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine.
"Several of these herbs used for the treatment are available here at the Irani markets, therefore, we provide locally-made medicine," she added. Dr Saleha said that treatment is ideally given for a period of three to six months prior to attempting conception.
According to Muneer Ahmed of Red Diamond Medical Centre, as no two people have the same infertility problem, herbal treatment courses have been designed to cater to several individual requirements as possible.
"The root cause of all sexual disorders lies in ignorance, bad habits, wrong life styles and unnatural sex acts of younger days. These destroy one's own body and health," he said.
The system of treatment involves Ayurveda, the 6,000-year-old therapy of India for all kinds of diseases including infertility. Dr Ahmed said that this treatment is free from toxins and any side effects.
"It is a combination of soft medicine, proper food and a healthy lifestyle," he said, adding that a treatment called Uttaravasti has proved to be an effective treatment for infertility due to tubular blockade in women.
