Gulf Medical University in Ajman conducts its biggest virtual convocation

Ajman - 354 healthcare professionals from 41 countries, including 36 Emiratis conferred degrees this year

Gulf Medical University (GMU), owned by the Thumbay Group, conducted its biggest virtual convocation this year, conferring degrees to 354 healthcare professionals from 41 countries to join the frontline, including 36 Emirati graduates.

Selected graduates were presented degrees by Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder, President Board of Trustees, in presence of Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of GMU, and various deans of colleges.

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Moideen, said, “GMU is now into its 23rd year of operation and we are now among the most-in-demand private medical university in the region. Our network of Thumbay Academic Hospitals is among the biggest in the network of academic hospitals in the country. We have been unique and trendsetting, and have attracted students from 86 countries, faculty and staff from 50 countries and treated patients from over 175 nationalities.”

Dr. Moideen thanked His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman for the government’s continuous support to the institution. He acknowledged the contributions of the academic team, headed by the Chancellor, the faculty, administrative staff and other staff of GMU. He assured the graduates of GMU’s support.

Prof. Hamdy informed that the number of colleges had increased to six –  medicine, dentistry, health sciences, pharmacy, nursing and the College of Health Care Administration and Economics – making it the only college with this specialisation in the Middle East region. The number of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes has increased to 27, in addition to the doctorate programme – PhD in Precision Medicine that will be awarded in 2021 by GMU and the French university, Paris Saclay.

“More than 2,000 students from 86 countries are currently studying at the university. They are learning together, united by the value of tolerance, and we hope that the number of students during the next three years will reach nearly 3,000,” he said.

“For the first time in a private university, GMU established an integrated system of healthcare and academia thus improving the level of health services, education and scientific research,” he added.

In the field of scientific research, GMU has established internationally recognised research laboratories that cooperate with a large number of international research centres and work with their counterparts in the UAE, especially in the field of immunology research for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases.

The university’s colleges and faculty conduct high quality scientific research and have published papers that have been accepted fro printing in major scientific journals such as ‘Nature’.

Prof. Hamdy advised the graduates to be led by the values of empathy, altruism, conscience, truthfulness, teamwork and fear of God, throughout their careers.

The 354 graduates included 62 students from medicine, 29 from preclinical sciences, 12 from biomedical sciences, 13 from Masters in Joint Health Professions Education, 5 in Masters in Public Health, 51 from dentistry, 31 from pharmacy, 10 from Masters in Clinical Pharmacy, 21 from physiotherapy, 8 from medical laboratory, 9 from medical imaging, 9 from anesthesia technology, 7 from Masters in Physical Therapy, 72 from nursing and 15 from Masters in Healthcare Management and Economics.
