Govt warns consumers of China-made toothpastes

ABU DHABI - The government has cautioned people against buying China-made toothpastes which are banned by the Ministry of Economy (MoE) and the Secretariat General of Municipalities because they may contain diethylene glycol (DEG), a poisonous chemical used as coolant.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Head of the Consumer Protection Department at the MoE, told Khaleej Times yesterday, “We would clear all toothpastes in the UAE markets in a couple of days as we have started checking the stocks throughout the country.

“DEG is very dangerous for human beings. People should take utmost care while purchasing any paste product. If they notice anything suspicious, they should report immediately over the MoE's toll-free hotline number 600522225.”

The potentially poisonous Chinese toothpastes are being sold in the UAE markets under the following brand names: Best, Smile, Acura, Special 2, Shine, Moon Light, Clean Up and Zane.

Khaleej Times had reported in August about the ban on China-made toothpastes in Saudi Arabia as they contained poisonous residues. At that time, Abu Dhabi Municipality had ordered all shops and supermarkets in the Capital to remove the China-made toothpastes from the shelves.

The MoE issued warnings to all suppliers and departments in the UAE against selling the brands of toothpastes which are hazardous to the consumers' health. The move was taken after receiving information from the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on the presence of the hazardous chemical in toothpastes imported from China, said Al Nuaimi.
