'Get checked regularly for breast cancer'

Sharjah - Experts urged women to 'remind individuals of the importance of mammograms and self-checking' at the Sharjah Ladies Club breast cancer awareness campaign.

Sharjah Ladies Club, in collaboration with Zulekha Hospitals and the Warriors in Pink, hosted an awareness lecture to educate women about breast cancer detection, prevention and cure.
The event took place during the Pink October, the international breast cancer awareness month, which is marked annually every October, all over the world.

The lecture was organized at Al Juman Hall in Sharjah Ladies Club with the presence of Khawla Al Sarkal, Director General of SLC, and members of Zulekha's medical team in Dubai and Sharjah, SLC's members and staff from different ages and nationalities. The lecture, given by Dr Pamela Munster, included a brief about breast cancer; its causes, symptoms, prevention and detection. She strongly urged women to undergo regular checkups, as early detection is critical for successful treatment and cure.

Speaking on the occasion, Khawal Al Serkal said: "Sharjah Ladies Club is committed to spread awareness among women about the life-threatening diseases, including breast cancer which is far more common in women than in men. It is important to organize awareness lectures and campaigns to spread awareness among women of this disease and provide them with reliable medical information about how to overcome this disease. We extend thanks to Zulekha Hospitals for their collaboration with us in protecting the health and safety of women and community at large".

Zanubia Shams, CEO of Zulekha Hospital, said: "The key message of the new campaign is to encourage women to get checked regularly and remind individuals of the importance of mammograms and self-checking, and show that together we can help prevent breast cancer if the disease is identified at an early enough stage."
Sharjah Ladies Club aims to provide a suitable environment for women that would help them strengthen their prominent role in the development of their society.
