A GCC national was sentenced to a three-year suspended jail term by the Fujairah Court of Appeal for unintentionally running over a close friend.
The Fujairah Court of First Instance had earlier found the man guilty and sentenced him to serve one month in prison, a fine of Dh1,100 and Dh50 as court charges.
The litigants were having a minor dispute when the defendant tried to end in a "funny" manner by threatening to run over the victim. However, he lost control over the steering wheel and did run over his friend who sustained serious injuries, fractures and a permanent disability.
The defendant told the lower court that he did not mean to hurt his "lifetime" friend.  "We were having issues which remained unsolved for a while I was trying to end it, but things went wrong unintentionally," he said.
The victim told the court that he was trying to get into his car when he was surprised by his friend's car heading towards him at a high speed. "I tried to jump into my car, but got run over."
He suffered several injuries and fractures all over his body. "I had to be subjected to an emergency surgery that ended in a permanent disability."
The appeal court, which convicted the defendant, ordered a three-year suspended jail term.
