Over 70kg of paan and niswar, two kinds of banned tobacco products that are chewed, were confiscated by the Dibba Fujairah (DF) Municipality.
The department of public services and environment seized the contraband in the first three months of this year, said Hassan Salem Al Yamahi, director-general of the municipality.
"Legal action has been taken against the violators, who were nabbed during inspections and raids."
Al Yamahi added that paan and niswar are prohibited. "However, some people promote and sell them in violation of law."
Consuming paan and niswar does not only affect their users, but they also tarnish the image of the city roads and buildings, he pointed out.
"The remains of the chewed stuff are left behind on the ground and the paan stains on the walls are hard to remove."
Paan and niswar contain a mixture of tobacco, some chemicals, and seeds available in south-east Asian countries, he pointed out.
"They are very harmful to health and cause several diseases, and damage to the nervous system," he said. "More inspection campaigns to curb such illegal activities to ensure public safety and health will be initiated."
Dr Roua Abd Elaim, a pharmacist, said paan and niswar are two of the main reasons behind gum cancer, gastric and mouth ulcers, depression, insomnia, exhaustion, laziness and lack of concentration, as well as teeth discolouring.
"These tobacco products are extremely dangerous, particularly for young kids who could get addicted to them."
