The Dibba Al Fujairah Municipality has confiscated 72 fishing nets, locally known as Qaraqeer, for violating prescribed rules.
The nets were seized during 1,227 inspection raids launched across the city in 2019, according to Hassan Al Yamahi, director- general of the civic body.
"Staff inspectors of the environment protection section at the department of public works and environment have booked 190 people for breaching environmental rules and regulations."
Inspection teams covered the entire city to make sure that all the beaches, parks and fishing ports at the Dibba Al Fujairah city and its suburbs are well-protected, he pointed out.
"Special attention was given to Dibba, Roll-Dibba, Rudal Dhidana, Badiya, and Sharm."
Littering and sewage leakage were on top of the environmental violations reported, he pointed out. "Hefty fines were slapped against erring people and entities."
Yamahi said his teams carried out a slew of 31 activities to raise public awareness about the importance of keeping the environment clean. "Several clean-up campaigns were organised across the city as well."
"We have also conducted special campaigns to enlighten the school students and all the institutions here about the environment and how to protect it and keep it clean."
Brochures were also distributed to the students, workers, and the public, he said. "More inspection raids will be carried out to protect the environment."
