Strong winds whipped up by Cyclone Kyarr has wreaked havoc in the UAE's east coast, with a five star beach property incurring heavy losses.
Miramar Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah said its property was "heavily damaged" on Wednesday, October 30, when strong waves crashed into its beach side restaurant, smashing glass windows and sweeping away sunbeds and umbrellas.
Ashraf Helmi, general manager of the resort, said the hotel's beach remained closed on Wednesday. "The sea was rough and the waves were very strong all evening. By 10-10.30pm on Tuesday night, the waves got really mighty and crashed into the restaurant. We did not expect it to be that bad," Helmi told Khaleej Times. "The waves took away most of the sand on our beach. All the sunbeds and umbrellas also got swept away."
Helmi said the hotel's beach side restaurant took the worst hit as its glass windows got smashed. "Chairs, tables, wooden partitions are either broken or swept away. We had to close down the restaurant on Wednesday."
Helmi said renovation works are in progress as the hotel is aiming to reopen the beach and restaurant by Thursday. "We are hoping the sea will calm down by then, as per the forecast," said Helmi.
