Why do we see hail in summer?

According to meteorologists, hail during summer occurs when surface temperatures are warm, but the upper atmosphere is still cold enough to support ice.

Hail can occur during summer due to strong updrafts in convective clouds. These strong updrafts, fueled by rising warm air, carry water droplets and ice particles high into the atmosphere, where they freeze and become hailstones.

Relief from heat

The rain and hail bring some respite from the high temperatures the coountry has been witnessing this summer.

Last week, UAE recorded the highest temperature of the summer season so far. A temperature of 49.9°C was recorded in Mezaira (Al Dhafra region) on June 21.

Average temperatures have remained over 45°C of late, with last month being the hottest May in over 20 years in the UAE with temperature hitting 51.6ºC.

Hailstorms in the past

Parts of UAE had witnessed hail in January this year, as heavy to moderate rainfall occurred in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain.

In October 2024, hailstorm accompanied by heavy rains had hit parts of UAE. The country's eastern region was impacted by stormy weather, with hail hitting parts of Sharjah and heavy rains in Ras Al Khaimah. Storm Centre had shared videos of the pelting hail in Sharjah.

Apart from the hailstorm in some areas, heavy rains had hit the country, causing waterfalls to form in mountainous areas.
