An 18 -year- old Arab-American who killed his father  in November last year has been sentenced to three years jail by the Sharjah Sharia court presiding judge Hussain Al Ousofi. After the jail term he will be deported.
The family of the accused has pardoned him from getting capital punishment and paying blood money on the premises that he was mentally ill.
Lawyer Salem Sahooh, presented to the presiding judge a letter from the accused's brother who was in US, saying that he, along with his mother and uncles, have pardoned the accused. The advocate had earlier submitted his defence saying the accused was not in his senses when he committed the crime.
According to the hospital, he cannot be held responsible for his acts as he is mentally ill, said the lawyer. "He spent seven months at Al Amal Hospital in Dubai. He was taken back to jail after he showed signs of improvement, though he is still on medication." He has requested the presiding judge to implement article number 1/60 of federal law 1987.
The mother who attended the court hearing told Khaleej Times that they had pardoned her son as he was well behaved and loved by everyone. She added that he was brilliant and had gone to the US when he was 16 to join university and study international law. He was in his second year of college when he complained that he could not focus on his studies. That was the beginning of his illness, said the mother. His uncle brought him back to the UAE and the parents took him to several doctors for treatment, including a faith healer from Sudan.
During court hearing, the accused's uncle narrated the tragic details of the incident. He said that on November 14, last year at about 1am, he went to his brother's office after a relative informed him that his brother was unwell. On entering the office, he found his brother lying in a pool of blood. The son was kneeling next to the father and kissing him. On seeing the uncle, the accused handed over the fire extinguisher saying, "please beat me like I did."
The youngster was behaving strangely even when the police arrived at the crime scene, the victim's office in Al Qasimia, said the uncle. The victim was taken to Kuwaiti Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police investigations showed that the accused was brought back to the UAE because of his mental illness. A faith healer from Sudan who treated him said the youngster was much better and left. Unfortunately, the crime transpired that very night. After dropping off the healer, the father-son duo entered the former's office where the accused allegedly hit him on the head with a fire extinguisher.
During interrogation, the son told the police that a jinn had ordered him to kill his father. He also claimed that he was not aware of what he had done.
