The Dubai Police arrested 146 suspects and seized counterfeit products worth Dh211.8 million during the first quarter of the year.
Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief for criminal investigation at the Dubai Police, said that the anti-economic crimes department arrested the suspects who were involved in 137 counterfeit cases.
Major-General Al Mansouri said that among the suspects, there was an Asian national who was arrested for a second time for the same offence. He was arrested from Al Jafiliya area, where he used to sell the counterfeit goods. The suspect was arrested several months ago for selling fake goods in a villa in Jumeirah.
Al Mansouri added that the suspect resumed his illegal activities in a different area, taking advantage of his relationship with small-scale traders and customers.
Al Mansouri added that the department of economic crimes control uses advanced methods to reduce fraud in commercial brands, as part of its fight against economic crimes. He said that several large companies are badly affected by fake products, and that the matter is being treated seriously by the authorities.
Separately, Col. Salah Buaseiba, director of the department of economic crimes, said that 77 people were arrested following 71 piracy cases, which led to seizure of goods worth Dh114.55million during first quarter of this year.
