A man has been sentenced to six months in jail for blackmailing his ex-girlfriend after stealing her mobile phone.
According to prosecution records, the 39-year-old Egyptian engineer had threatened his Filipina secretary and blackmailed her to pay him sums of money or he would spread the word that she was having an affair with him after he got access to her private photos.
The engineer is accused of sending the woman an email, in which he threatened her of using her photos against her unless she paid him the money he wanted.
The Court of First Instance found him guilty of blackmailing, making threats of defamation via the Internet and theft. He will be deported after serving his jail term.
The secretary, 29, said in the investigation that she reported the incident at Al Rafaa police station and they issued a circular regarding the same on February 1.
Few days later, she received a phone call from the accused, offering her help in finding her mobile phone. He asked her to give him his phone password.
"I gave him my phone password to unlock the phone. But about three weeks later, I received an email with a threat."
The sender allegedly informed her that he had access to all her accounts on her phone and that he possessed her personal photos and videos. "He warned me against making any stupid moves or trying to take revenge or else, he said, I would suffer."
Again, she reported the incident to the police station. "After coordination with the police, it was found that the email belonged to the accused."
The police found the phone in the defendant's car boot. "He said he took it as a guarantee from her so that she would repay the amounts of money she had borrowed from him." The verdict may be appealed within 15 days.
