Two oil firm employees who were convicted of taking a Dh325,000 bribe from a contracting company have been acquitted on appeal.
The Abu Dhabi Appeal Court cleared the general manager and engineer of the bribery charges on grounds of lack of sufficient evidence, to prove that they had taken a bribe from the construction firm.
Official court documents stated that the Arab men were prosecuted after authorities received a complaint from their employer that they had taken bribe as commission in return for awarding a construction project to a company.
Authorities said that the company's internal audit showed that there was receipt of the cash that was paid as bribe. The Criminal Court of First Instance had convicted the men of bribery. The pair, however, challenged the ruling in the appeal court stressing on the fact that they were wrongly convicted.
Their lawyer urged that the prosecution had not submitted sufficient evidence to prove his clients had asked for or received any bribe from the construction company. The contracting company also denied giving any commission to the men.
