A driver whose car’s cruise control system jammed while travelling at high speed on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road was rescued by Dubai Police patrols, who intervened quickly to prevent a potential accident.

The incident took place as the vehicle was heading towards Abu Dhabi, and the driver reported being unable to slow down or brake. Within minutes of receiving the alert, Dubai Police traffic teams located the vehicle, cleared surrounding traffic, and safely guided the driver to bring the car to a stop without injuries or damage.

Brigadier Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said the operations room received a report that the driver was unable to control his vehicle due to a technical failure in the cruise control system. The car was moving continuously and not responding to the brakes or accelerator.

Traffic patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene. “The team located the vehicle and stayed in constant contact with the driver, guiding him through each step to ensure his safety and that of others on the road,” he said.

The officers created a safety corridor around the vehicle, clearing traffic in front of and behind it. This allowed the driver to safely bring the vehicle to a stop without injuries or damage.

Bin Suwaidan praised the coordination between the command centre and field patrols, calling it a strong example of efficient emergency response.

What to do if cruise control malfunctions

Dubai Police also shared steps for motorists to follow in case of a similar issue:

  • Remain calm and do not panic

  • Fasten seatbelt and switch on hazard lights

  • Call 999 immediately to report the incident

  • Shift the gear to neutral (N) and turn off the engine, then restart it

  • If that fails, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal

  • If braking doesn’t work, slowly pull the handbrake while holding the steering wheel firmly

  • As a last resort, switch between neutral (N) and drive (D) to try to regain control

Regular inspections critical

The Dubai Police official urged all drivers to conduct regular vehicle checks, particularly for systems such as brakes and cruise control. “Awareness and quick decision-making during emergencies can make a critical difference in preventing road accidents,” he said.
