A cleaner was caught by the Dubai Police's criminal investigation department (CID) officers as he tried to sell a stolen watch worth Dh20,000, a court has heard. The 25-year-old Pakistani man worked for a cleaning company and was tasked with cleaning aeroplanes at the Dubai International Airport. During a cleaning session, the cleaner allegedly pocketed the watch and a pair of AirPods, the Court of First Instance was told.
Another Pakistani cleaner, 25, is accused of being in possession of the stolen watch.
During the public prosecution investigation, the defendant admitted he took the watch which he found beneath a seat in a plane's business class towards the end of July. He asked his friend to go with him to a mall, where he visited a jewellery shop and found the watch was original worth Dh20,000. He tried to sell it there, but could not do so.
They went to a shop at the Gold Souq, where they tried to sell the watch again. The CID officers caught him and he reportedly admitted to stealing it. The two defendants were taken into custody.
A policeman told the prosecutor that around 9pm on July 28, they received a call from the jewellery shop. "We learned that a Pakistani man wanted to sell a branded watch. As per routine procedure, we went to the shop. At first, the main accused claimed he received the watch as a gift from his father back home. But as we interrogated him further, he admitted to stealing it."
