Tributes pour in for ex-Dubai resident killed in Canada crash

Dubai - Tributes poured in from UAE-based businessmen and community leaders, with many hailing his social work.

Long-time Dubai resident Jasjit Singh Jaaj died in a road accident in Toronto, Canada, on Tuesday morning. According to the police, Jaaj, 73, was crossing a six-lane highway in Mississaga to get to the other side after a morning walk when he was struck by a car. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to injuries a little after.
Jaaj, a former President of the Indian Association Dubai, was on the management staff of Khaleej Times at the turn of the century and leaves behind his wife and two sons.
Tributes poured in from UAE-based businessmen and community leaders, with many hailing his social work.
Ram Buxani, chairman of ITL Cosmos Group, said: "I have known Jasjit Singh Jaaj for a very long time, and when he was in Dubai, I would meet him every day. His role in social life and as a social worker in Dubai will never be forgotten. In his capacity as the president of the Indian Association Dubai, he took it to new heights and his contribution to society will never be forgotten. He was always very active and ever ready for social causes."
Head of the Sikh Gurudwara in Dubai, Surendar Singh Kandhari, said he had known Jaaj since 1977. "He was a community leader, and a very nice person. The first dinner he had when he came to Dubai was with me. I feel very sad learning the news of his passing, I pray his soul rests in eternal peace."
Vasu Shroff, chairman of the Regal Group of Companies, called Jaaj "a very good friend". "He had very good relations with the Indian community. He was very charming, always smiling, and took time to meet with people. He was very helpful."
