An expat has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he was caught in possession of a consignment of e-cigarette filters filled with cannabis liquid hidden in a bag of candies.
The court heard that the 26-year-old man from the US was nabbed at the Dubai International Airport on March 5 when arriving to pick up a consignment found to contain the contraband substance. He is also accused of using hashish. The man has been placed in detention.
A customs inspector said he was on job around 6.40am at the airport. "I was on the field at a shipping agency when a consignment arrived from the US. It raised our suspicion as its papers said that it contained personal belongings, including shoes, pair of eyeglasses, and a bag of candies."
The sergeant told the investigator that upon opening the bag, they found eight e-cigarette filters filled with hashish liquid stashed in it. The shipment was in the defendant's name and had his address and phone number.
The defendant was arrested on March 5 when he went to the airport to collect the packet. The man was then referred to the anti-narcotics department.
According to a report from the forensics department, the defendant's urine sample tested positive for hashish.
The quantity of drugs seized from the accused weighed 102,44 grams. The trial has been adjourned to September 21.
