The UAE on Monday announced a holiday for Muharram 1, Hijri 1441, the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
According to a statement issued by Federal Authority For Government Human Resources on social media today, Muharram 1, 1441 will be a holiday for the public sector/federal government workers.
The announcement was made based on the Council of Ministers Resolution No. 37 of 2019.

According to a circular issued earlier this year, both public and private sector will get the same number of holidays. The Islamic New Year is expected to begin on September 1, 2019, which will be a Sunday, thereby giving UAE residents a three-day weekend.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation in UAE has also announced the 1st of Muharram 1441 as an official holiday on the occasion of Hijri New Year. This will be a paid holiday for all government entities, establishments, and private companies in the UAE.
The official announcement of the first day of Muharram is subject to the sighting of the moon.
The Authority extended its congratulations on the occasion to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates; the people of the UAE and Arab and Islamic nations.
