A 40-year-old Arab man was sentenced to one year in jail by the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday for robbing - together with an accomplice who is at large - Dh1 million from an Iranian businessman. He has also been ordered to pay a Dh1 million fine and will be deported after serving his jail term.
The court was earlier told that the Arab man, on a visit visa, was with the runaway accomplice, when the latter snatched a briefcase with Dh1 million from the businessman.
A 39-year-old African man, who is accused of possessing Dh459,000 which is part of the stolen amount while aware of where it came from, has been referred to the Court of Misdemeanours.
Only the first accused (the Arab) is in detention.
The case dates back to June 17 and was registered at Al Muraqqabat police station.
During investigation, the 38-year-old Iranian businessman said that he was near a hotel in Deira around 2.30pm. "I went to meet the first defendant at his office to strike a commercial deal. I brought Dh1 million that I kept in a briefcase with me. As I was waiting there in my car, an African man, posing as a security guard, told me he would lead me to the defendant's office. But he suddenly snatched the bag of money from my hand and fled the scene."
Another Iranian businessman, 37, corroborated the complainant's statement. "We were waiting while the first defendant was talking to my friend on the phone leading him to the meeting venue. The runaway accused asked my friend about the money and when he learned it was in the briefcase, he snatched it. We reported him to the police."
A police lieutenant told the public prosecution investigator that they arrested the defendants at a hotel lobby in Deira. "The Arab man admitted the robbery and said he had planned it together with a Turkish man (who was in Turkey). He had met the complainant at his office prior to the incident day."
The defendant can appeal the ruling within 15 days.
