Heads up, shoppers: Dh4 million worth of prizes will be up for grabs for residents and visitors who will be buying gold jewellery and diamonds during the upcoming Dubai Shopping Festival, the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) announced on Sunday, December 22. Up to 3,000 gold coins, each weighing 8g, will be given away.
With every jewellery purchase of Dh500 from any of the participating jewellery outlets, customers will be entitled to one raffle coupon. There will be five winners in daily draws from December 26, 2019, to February 1, 2020. The first winner will get 25 coins; 20 for the second; 15 for the third; 10 for the fourth; and five for the fifth.
Then, shoppers can win more every Saturday from January 4, 2020, where three additional customers can win five coins each.
Those who will use Visa cards for the purchase will have a higher chance of winning as they will be entitled to double raffle coupons.
To mark 25 years of the Dubai Shopping Festival, a special 'Dubai City of Gold' commemorative coin was also launched on Sunday.
Since its inception, DGJG has given away 900kg of gold worth Dh170 million during the shopping festival.
Chetan Karani, secretary of DGJG, said they receive over a million coupons every year during the promotion, showing how must consumers enjoy it.
"We tried several different prizes but eventually came back to gold because of customer demand. This year, we have over 3,000 coins of special edition to be given away. For every Dh500 purchase, the consumers will be entitled to one raffle coupon and two coupons on purchase of Dh500 worth of diamond and precious metals," he said.
"All retailers are looking forward to it. We have seen a challenging year and we are looking to a bumper business from January onwards."
Tawhid Abdullah, chairman of DGJG, said they are expecting a 15-20 per cent increase in business during shopping festival period.
How to win gold coins this DSF
>Buy jewellery worth Dh500 from any of the participating outlets and get one raffle coupon for the draw
>If you purchase Dh500 worth of diamond and precious metals, you will be entitled to two coupons
>If you use a Visa card, you will get double raffle coupons
>Five winners will be drawn every day from December 26, 2019, to February 1, 2020 (first winner will get 25 gold coins, second will have 20, 15 for third, 10 for fourth, and five for fifth)

Bigger Dubai Gold Souk coming up next year
Brace for a bigger Dubai Gold Souk next year as a major extension and refurbishment project is under way, said Tawhid Abdullah, chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group. It is set to be completed by June 2020.
"It is the extension and huge enrichment of Gold Souk. We will have a bigger souk and double the numbers we have. There will be more entertainment, more coffee shops, toilets and parking services," he said on Sunday.
"By June 2020, the outlets will be handed over. We hope that by Expo 2020 in October, the project will be fully operational. The extension and refurbishment covers around 250 stores and 700 offices."
