Another 18 Dubai government entities will soon be going paperless as part of the Smart Dubai strategy, a senior official said on Tuesday, October 8.
At the rate the smart efforts are going, Dubai is on track to achieving its target of making government offices 100 per cent paperless by 2021, said Wesam Lootah, CEO of Smart Dubai.
"We started with six entities in 2018 and set a target to reduce paper by 50 per cent. We achieved 57 per cent by December 2018. Now, we have already passed the 70 per cent mark to go paperless and have reduced paper consumption by 75 million sheets, either through digitisation, management policies, or integration of the system," Lootah said.
Now, they are mapping out an action plan for the next two batches of entities on board.
"We are at the baseline to understand how many processes would they need to digitise. The target for the second batches of nine entities is November this year and, for the third batch, it's the first quarter of 2020," Lootah told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of a Press conference at Gitex Technology Week on Tuesday.
Smart Dubai is eyeing to convert a total of 44 government entities into paperless offices by 2021.
"But we are also seeing private firms taking a cue from the government entities and reducing their own paper consumption," Lootah added.
Earlier this week, Smart Dubai launched 27 new services across several important sectors via its flagship DubaiNow application - a one-stop shop for all smart services in the emirate.
Road to happiness
At the core of the emirate's smart efforts is the drive to make Dubai the 'happiest city on Earth' by 2021.
On Tuesday, Smart Dubai also signed a strategic partnership with Software AG to accelerate this plan and connect Dubai-wide government entities and key private sector systems and processes.
Through the technological transformation it's undergoing, Dubai seeks to "enhance the wellbeing and satisfaction of all citizens, residents and visitors", said Dr Aisha bint Butti bin Bishr, director-general of Smart Dubai.
"We create the right environment to improve the city's ranking across a host of other metrics, including ease of conducting business that will boost the emirate's economy," she added.
Sanjay Brahmawar, CEO of Software AG, said Smart Dubai is a global benchmark for smart city development.
"As the hidden engine of Dubai's digital drive, we look forward to offering a robust platform that supports real-time integration and joining the city's commitment to deliver a seamless, safe and personalised experience to its people," Brahmawar said.
