'Beautiful': Dubai Ruler praises Emirates for 'aircrafted' school bags initiative

School bags made from a plane? Students in Africa recieved a "piece of history" to take to school as UAE's flag carrier launched an initiative to help support education.

These limited-edition backpacks by Emirates use material taken from the aircraft, collecting 50,000kg from 191 aircraft, according to Talal Al Gergawi, Emirates' country manager, Zimbabwe.

In a video shared by the airline, the students can be seen sporting the limited-edition backpacks. While the material was taken from the craft, the Dubai team worked to ensure the bags are "brand new", said Omar Bushlaibi, country manager for Zambia.

Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum expressed praise, calling it a "beautiful initiative", and reposting the Emirates video on social media. Watch the video here:

The recipients expressed their gratitude for everything the airline did for the children.

"We are so touched that Emirates "would think about us in this part of the world," said Elarm Chalusa, headteacher of Jana Secondary School under ACE.

While the initiative provides bags, it is about more than materials; the supplies represent "comfort, dignity and practical support to those in need. These simple items can make a world of difference in their everyday life," stressed Dr Fatima Maruta, founder of Rose of Sharon School.
