Technology and law enforcement

Dr Al Hamrani discussed how AI plays a crucial role in supporting Dubai Police’s efforts to combat crime in various sectors. “AI can significantly assist law enforcement agencies in managing and fighting crime,” he said. “The governance of AI, through legal frameworks and advanced technologies, is key to ensuring its successful implementation in policing.”

He highlighted the importance of AI in tackling the rising number of cybercrimes as society increasingly shifts to a digital lifestyle. “With crimes evolving in the digital world, AI solutions are essential to detect and prevent such offenses,” Al Hamrani emphasised, noting that Dubai Police would share global best practices and technological innovations with law enforcement agencies from around the world during the summit.

Cybersecurity strategies

When discussing the summit’s focus on cybersecurity, Dr Al Hamrani pointed out that cybercrimes are an escalating challenge. “In today’s world, everyone is digitally connected, and the scope for digital crimes is vast. At the summit, we will present various strategies and solutions from around the world, exchanging insights from different cultures and regions.”

He also mentioned that Dubai Police’s contributions to the summit would not only focus on technological innovations but also showcase how these solutions have been practically applied. “We are using cutting-edge technologies like biometrics and deepfake detection to tackle emerging threats,” he added.

“Our work in these areas will be highlighted, with real-world examples demonstrating how these tools are effectively used to solve crimes and apprehend criminals.”

Lt. Col. Dr Rashid Al Ghafri, Deputy Director of the General Department of Forensics and Criminology, also spoke about the importance of collaboration at the summit. “The World Police Summit provides a unique opportunity for law enforcement agencies, private sector innovators, and academia to come together,” he said.

“It is a platform to learn from best global practices, share knowledge, and explore new technologies that will ultimately enhance the safety and security of our communities.”

The summit, under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is set to be a pivotal event for law enforcement professionals worldwide. The event will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, with a strong focus on redefining policing standards through innovation and collaboration.

Future of policing

Last year, the World Police Summit saw discussions on Dubai Police's plans to deploy robotic dogs in high-risk situations. Currently, Dubai's K9 unit, which includes German Shepherds, Malinois, and other breeds, has been involved in over 3,000 operations in 2023 alone.

These innovations, along with AI-driven solutions such as the rapid autopsy technology, continue to demonstrate Dubai Police’s commitment to staying at the forefront of policing advancements.

As part of its strategic focus, Dubai Police is also utilising AI to solve crimes faster. For instance, Dubai Police has reduced crime-solving timelines to just 10 days, compared to two months in Germany, 35 days in the United States, and 180 days in France.

“Our aim is to leverage AI technologies to expedite investigations and enhance our overall efficiency,” said Dr Al Hamrani.
