Dubai inmates' team honoured by FIDE for winning international chess tournament

The team beat 115 other chess squads from 51 countries at the tournament organised online by the Cook County Office in Chicago

The champion team from Dubai Police Punitive and Correctional Establishments was recently honoured by the International Chess Federation for winning the 4th Intercontinental Chess Cup for Prisoners.
The inmates’ team beat 115 other chess squads from 51 countries at the international chess tournament organised by the Cook County Office in Chicago, and held online for three days last year.
Dubai Police's Punitive and Correctional Establishments chess players were crowned champions after defeating the male inmate team from El Salvador's Punitive and Correctional Establishments in the final round.

Dubai Police shared photos on Saturday of André Vögtlin, chair of the FIDE Social Commission, honouring the Dubai team. Vögtlin congratulated the inmates' team on their impressive victory and expressed his wishes for their continued success in future tournaments.
Also present was LtCol Mohammed Abdullah Al Obaidli, director of the Inmate Education and Training Department, who highlighted “Dubai Police’s commitment to involving inmates in various sports tournaments, intellectual games, and local, regional, and international educational programs.
Al Obaidli emphasised “these activities are vital for improving inmates' physical fitness, channeling their energy into positive pursuits, and utilizing their free time effectively.
“Additionally, these activities boost motivation through both individual and team competitions, including the Continental Chess Championship, in which Dubai's inmates participate annually,” he added.
