Dubai: 2 football fans arrested for using distress signal flares during matches

Two football fans have been arrested for using distress signal flares during matches, Dubai Police said on Thursday.
Post this incident, the authority has issued a stern warning to all fans, urging them not to carry pyrotechnics or flammable materials. Possession of prohibited or hazardous materials, particularly fireworks, in sports facilities or event venues can lead to imprisonment for up to three months and fines reaching Dh30,000.

The warning comes after multiple incidents where fans were caught using these signals, posing serious risks to everyone present at the sporting events.
Dubai Police have reiterated the importance of adhering to Federal Law No. 8 of 2014, which governs the security of sports facilities and events.
They have urged fans to refrain from using hazardous materials, fireworks, or any flammable substances in stadiums, as these can jeopardize the safety of fans, players, officials, and all individuals in the vicinity.
Maj-Gen Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs, emphasised the preparedness of police personnel from various units — including security teams, special operations, traffic patrols, and mounted units — to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans at all matches. He asserted that police would respond decisively to any breaches of stadium security.
He also stressed that anyone who commits, participates in, incites, or attempts acts of violence—including throwing any substances or liquids toward another spectator or in the vicinity of the stadium, or using insulting language and offensive gestures—will face imprisonment and/or fines ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh30,000.
Al Ghaithi reiterated that Dubai Police will hold anyone who breaks the law accountable, highlighting their commitment to the safety and security of sports venues. He assured that the police would do everything possible to secure the stadiums and the audience, both inside and outside, while safeguarding vehicles and providing all necessary services before, during, and after the matches.
In 2023, several fans were taken into custody by Sharjah Police after a mass brawl erupted during an ADNOC Pro League match. Those involved in the fight were arrested and released after interrogation. Additionally, in 2022, public prosecutors in Abu Dhabi ordered the arrest of all fans involved in riots during a match between Al Ain and Al Wahda clubs.
