The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has heard the case of a woman accused of consuming alcohol without a licence, assaulting a police officer and causing damage to a police patrol vehicle. She reportedly caused damage to the rear glass of the vehicle. During the hearing, the defendant admitted to consuming alcohol without a license, but denied the assault charge and causing damage to the patrol car. The accused said that she did not remember the details of the incident as she was under the influence of alcohol, Emarat Al Youm reported.
The defence provided the court with a waiver from the police officer, stressing on its client's willingness to bear any costs. The defence pointed out that the accused did not need a permit to consume alcohol as she is not Muslim. The accused expressed deep regret for her act, during the court session. She pointed out the fact that she has been a UAE resident for more than 6 years and has always respected the country's laws and also does not have any criminal record. She requested the court to use its utmost compassion during her trial.
