Drop in Residency Law Violations

ABU DHABI - Stringent measures placed by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) resulted in the apprehension of 27,550 residency law violators and 2,474 infiltrators from across the UAE in 2009, according to a senior official.

“Our efforts in curbing illegal aliens in the country resulted in the establishment of a special department to deal with the infiltrators and residency law violators,” said Major General Nasser Al Awadhi Al Minhali, acting assistant undersecretary for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs at the MoI, during a Press conference on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.

Calls to ‘Sahim’ service, a 24-hour toll free number (80080) which was launched last November resulted in 162 calls on information about infiltrators and visa violators.

“All these cases were dealt with and the people who reported them were honoured for their cooperation,” said Major General Minhali.

He added that his department has also filed 69 cases against residents who harboured the violators by providing them accommodation and transportation.

“Our next step will be a big awareness campaign this year on this matter. And after the campaign, we’ll be very strict and will issue harsh punishments,’’
