The Ras Al Khaimah Cassation Court has upheld the ruling of the lower court ordering a driver convicted of killing a man to pay a fine of Dh5,000 and Dh200,000 blood money to the heirs of the victim.
The driver - a GCC national - had failed to observe the traffic regulations and ran over the victim who died on the spot.
Earlier, the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour Court slapped the defendant with a fine of Dh5,000 and ordered her to pay the blood money of Dh200,000, along with court charges. The defendant, dissatisfied with the verdict, challenged it before the Court of Appeal, which turned her pleading down and affirmed the ruling of the lower court.
The case was moved to the RAK Cassation Court where the defendant argued that the victim was solely to blame for the accident because of crossing a highway - Emirates Road - from a non-pedestrian crossing.
The court, however, said the defendant veered off the road, ran over the victim who suffered serious chest injuries and was declared dead. The accident left huge damages on the defendant's car as well. It confirmed the ruling of the lower courts.
