A new hygiene rule by the Dubai Municipality (DM) will assure shisha smokers that smoking the water pipe will not at least cause them infectious diseases.
New rules for Dubai shisha outlets will make it mandatory for them to use disposable pipes instead of traditional shisha hoses.
The municipality's Public Health and Safety Department has issued a circular asking cafés and restaurants serving shishas to replace traditional shisha pipes with disposable ones for one-time use by October 15.
The rule is issued in accordance with the articles of the federal law number 15 of 2009 on tobacco control.
The Director of the department Marwan Al Mohammed said the move was aimed at protecting the shisha smokers from infectious diseases at least.
He said latest studies have found that shared use of shisha pipes can lead to a spread of several fungal, viral and bacterial infections including Herpes Simplex Virus-1, Hepatitis B, bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases.
He called on the public to report violations to DM call centre's hotline number 800900.
