More than 300 participants are all set to take on a unique triathlon in the hills of Hatta tomorrow.
The Garmin Quest 2020 is the region’s first long-distance adventure race of its kind.
From biking across the rugged Hajar mountains to trail running through some of the oldest inhabited lands in the UAE, and kayaking in the waters of the Hatta Dam, the race format promises participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The competition will take place in two categories: the Challenger category (open to people aged 14-60), and the Explore category (open to people aged 17-60).
The quest will also see 11 athletes of determination — aged between 13 and 22 — attempt to run 5.5km, cycle 13km and kayak 1km in the hills of Hatta. The athletes have been training with the UAE’s Heroes of Hope programme, which promotes inclusivity in sport for people of determination and fosters a sense of community and achievement.
Founder Hollie Murphy said, “The course in Hatta reflects the adversity the athletes of determination experience on a day-to-day basis. While it’s a daunting undertaking, that they are attempting the challenge shows that given the right platform and support, people of determination can reach a position to achieve anything.”
