Deira’s traditional markets have been transformed into a heritage hotspot, with three new tourist trails spanning nearly 1.8km. The Dh9.5 million project preserves the historic charm of the markets while offering visitors an immersive journey through Dubai’s culture, shopping, and history.

The trails connect key spots including the Gold Souq, Al Ahmadiya School, Spice Souq, and seven other traditional markets, featuring restored façades, upgraded pavements, new seating areas, and shaded walkways.

Authentic materials like sarooj (lime-based plaster) were used to maintain the markets’ heritage character. Wooden shading was restored and open areas upgraded. Three public squares were also developed with new seating and enhanced amenities.

The project features three trails that support over 500 shops within Deira’s Grand Souq. The Gold Souq, Al Ahmadiya School, and Spice Souq trails, which together span 25,800 square metres, connect seven traditional markets, including those for herbs, spices, utensils, perfumes, carpets, textiles, and household items.

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “Deira, with its heritage and traditional markets, is an inseparable part of Dubai’s cultural and historical identity. This project honours that deep-rooted legacy while keeping pace with the present and future.

“The project was carried out with meticulous attention to detail to ensure every feature reflects the area’s history and uniqueness. It enriches the journey for residents and visitors eager to discover Dubai’s past through its bustling markets, spaces where heritage, culture, and commerce converge, while also enhancing economic growth and supporting traders and investors.”
