Currently, medical services meant for treating mental disorders are not included in the mandatory insurance policy that was implemented by the government of Abu Dhabi last year.

The current policy requires all employers to bear treatment and medication expenses of their expat staff.

Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday on the sidelines of an international psychiatric conference, Dr El Zein Abbas Omara, consultant neuropsychiatrist at Al Noor Hospital, revealed that discussions are under way to convince the health authorities to include mental health in the insurance project.

“We are negotiating with the Health Authority, Abu Dhabi (HAAD) which implements and supervises the insurance scheme to include mental health services within the insurance coverage,” said Dr Omara.

The move is aimed at helping a majority of patients with mental disorders in the country to have access to proper medical care.

About the prevalence of mental disorders, he said mental disorders are increasing while the stigma linked with them prevents treatment in most cases.

“Mental disorders are more common in expatriate communities compared to UAE nationals because of homesickness and job insecurity,” noted Dr Omara.
