A car was recently caught speeding at 278kmph by a radar in Sharjah, the police said on Thursday.
As many as 274 motorists were fined for exceeding speeds of 200kmph during the first eight months of this year - between January 1 and August 31, the police revealed.
Major Mishaal bin Khadim, head of the traffic engineering department of Sharjah Police, said: "The fixed and mobile radars deployed on the streets and roads of the emirate of Sharjah have been able to detect 274 speeding violations in which the drivers went beyond the speed limit of 200kmph.
He added that the speed of one of the violating vehicles reached 278 kmph. The case falls under aggravated violations, as it exceeds the maximum speed limits by more than 80kmph. The fine for such violation is Dh3,000 and 23 black points. The violating vehicle is also impounded for 60 days. For exceeding speed limits by more than 60kmph, the fine imposed is Dh2,000 and 12 black points, apart from confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days, he pointed out.
Major Khadim underlined that black points are a smart way to deter reckless drivers and ensure they do not commit the same violations in the future.
