The drive, organised under the slogan 'Parks and Gardens are for all.. We should keep them clean and beautiful', urges visitors of these places to refrain from misuse of the facilities such as playing in landscaped areas, barbecuing in non-designated areas and littering.

Notice boards carrying the message have been placed in different locations in public parks and gardens. An advertising campaign has also been launched.

Abu Dhabi has over 20 public parks and gardens which are thronged by thousands everyday to escape from the rush of the city. However, uncivilised attitudes such as littering which spoils the beauty of gardens, in addition to playing on the grass and damaging trees and equipment earmarked for kids playing, raised concern among the officials.

The number of gardens constructed inside and outside Abu Dhabi city is 43 gardens and parks on an area of 418 hectares including, 14 public gardens inside Abu Dhabi city for women and children. There are also 10 parks within Abu Dhabi city. The area of green spaces within Abu Dhabi city amounted to 2,281 hectares. This covers planted spaces along roads and in clubs, hospitals, government offices, gardens and parks.

Al Raha beach has been set up where there is the Ladies Beach adjacent to it for ladies who need privacy. The breakwater area, which stretches into the sea close to the city has beautiful beaches surrounding it.

Among the most frequently visited public gardens and parks are two parks in Mushrif and Khalidiya meant only for children and women. All these parks and gardens are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. They also include well-equipped playgrounds for kids whose design takes into consideration their safety.

Residents are encouraged to contribute monetarily by way of payment of a small entrance fee to a number of the gardens. The Dh1 fee per person, although it barely supports the upkeep of the gardens which is a costly process, it encourages a degree of responsibility among those citizens using these spaces.

Providing access to green spaces and efforts to maintain them is a top priority for the municipality, according to an official.

"Spreading this green space eventually throughout the city has been a priority so as not to deny anyone the benefits whether they live in a high density of the core or the lower density residential areas. With the ever-growing population, this is not an easy feat," the official said.

He added: "Having had a very little greenery to enjoy in the past, the municipality is ever vigilant in ensuring that parks and gardens remain an important component of future city development."

Through community involvement in efforts to upkeep public parks and gardens, the municipality hopes that residents appreciate the efforts on the part of the government to better their environment, the official said.
