Around 300 road radars to be installed in Dubai

DUBAI - Around 300 different types of new road radars will be installed in Dubai during the current year, according to Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of General Department of Traffic.

These will include 174 new speed radars, 84 traffic signal radars,14 road shoulders radars and 15 mobile radars.

Al Zafin stated that the step had been taken to help reduce the number of fatalities and losses in terms of money and property in accordance with the directives of Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.

Al Zafin said that the total number of fixed radars would reach 513 by the end of 2008 while the number of mobile radars would rise to 30.

He said that traffic department had specified areas that needed intensive radar control. During 2007, the department installed 241 fixed and mobile radars on the Emirate Road and Al Garhood and Business Crossing.

They included 161 speed radars, 74 red signal radars and 6 road shoulder radars in addition to other 15 mobile radars in various roads.

Al Zafin said that according to statistics prepared by General Department of Traffic, speed violations had witnessed a significant rise.For example, from Janaury to the end of November 2007, speed radars had recorded 1,182,000 speed violations out of a total of 1,872,000 traffic violations.
